Growth is a funny thing.
You can do the hardest work of your life to change, apologize, and rebuild, and still find that some people only want to judge you for who you used to be.
I used to let that break my heart. Now, I just use it as fuel to keep going.
The truth is, people who are committed to judging you will always hold your past against you. But true, genuine change doesn't need everyone's approval. Walking away from the things that broke me and stepping into a sober, steady life is something no one's judgment can take away from me.
When you are doing the hard, daily work of changing your life, one of the most painful things you will encounter is conditional support. There is a specific kind of heartbreak in surviving your darkest days, putting in the quiet work to rebuild, and still hearing the words, **"I love you, but..."
* "I love you, but I’m just waiting for the other shoe to drop."
* "I love you, but I can't forget the person you used to be."
* "I love you, but I don't really believe people can actually change."
That tiny word—but—carries so much heavy baggage. It is a gentle, yet firm way of keeping you locked inside the box of your past mistakes. It dismisses the sobriety, the accountability, and the grace you are actively walking in today. It implies that your past is a stain that your present choices can never fully wash away.
If you are hearing that phrase right now, or feeling the judgment of people who refuse to let you grow, I want to remind you of something very important: You do not have to absorb their "but."
Your peace does not come from convincing everyone around you that you are different; it comes from the quiet, unshakeable knowledge that you actually ARE. You cannot control the lens through which people choose to view you, but you can absolutely control the life you build moving forward. God knows your heart, and He knows the real, honest work you are putting in.
To anyone who feels judged by a chapter they have already closed: Keep going. Give yourself the unconditional grace that others might not be ready to give. People really can change, and the beautiful, steady life you are living today is the only proof you need. Keep walking forward.
